The brains of your store should be the software and the backbone should be the franchisor behind it. Does the franchisor you're considering, or currently using, supply the system and the support you need to operate?

Pay close attention to the software
An eBay drop-off store can only make money by successfully auctioning other people’s items on eBay. When you open a retail drop-off site the entire process from take-in to seller check pay-out must be managed by an reliable and easy to operate computer program.
Developing the right software
Continuous problems arises because there are so many variables in the processes and the other systems the software needs to interface with. It appears to be very difficult for some franchisors to develop a reasonably-priced, easy to operate, software package that works good enough to automate the entire group of functions that the stores need. The more "workarounds" the software requires, the more time the owner will spend on nonproductive tasks.
Not all software is created equal
Many companies selling eBay drop-off stores have attempted to create their own version of software to handle these systems. Some have developed reasonably good packages while others have failed miserably. Nobody has a perfect program. Either way, you, the owner of the franchise, will be required to use their package even if it doesn’t work well. Priority software is a way for the franchisor to get more revenue and keep track of your sales.
If you are dead set on buying a franchise...
Before you sign anything or write a check, talk to someone who can explain all the facets of the drop-off store process, the numerous hidden fees, the multitude of variables, and why it’s not a simple linear process. Then talk to – no, go spend a week working in a store of the same brand that you are considering buying. Learn what works in their software and what you have to do using a “work around.” Find out what it takes to get help when a problem occurs, or how often it happens, and what are the negative effects until it gets corrected. What aspects of owning an eBay drop off store takes the most time from the owner’s day? Is it the software related? What solutions are documented and can be fixed by a manager without calling the owner?
If you are an independent Power Seller or Trading Assistant thinking about opening a store front, you have a grasp of what I’m talking about, but be forewarned; your small problems will multiply in complexity once you open a retail store or buy the franchise system.
If you go out on your own, you will most likely need to find an auction management program that will fit your needs. Shop wisely. If you want a recommendation please contact us.
